Hanoi has recently been included on TripAdvisor’s list of best destinations in the world for the first time.
The sixth annual Travelers’ Choice awards has sliced and diced its users’ reviews and ratings over 12 months into lists of its most highly recommended global and regional destinations.
The capital of Vietnam ranked 8th among the world’s top 25 destinations.
The charming Vietnamese capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture, while making room for modern developments, according to TripAdvisor.
“Hanoi may have shrugged off several former names, including Thang Long, or “ascending dragon,” but it hasn’t forgotten its past, as sites such as Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison attest,” the organization stated in a release.
“Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city, which is easily explored by taxi.”
Istanbul topped the travel review site’s list of best spots in the world this year; Rome and London rank second and third.
Along with Hanoi, five Asian cities, namely Beijing and Shanghai (China), Siem Reap (Cambodia), Bangkok and Chiang Mai (Thailand), also made the list.
