Day 01: Arrive in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon)
Upon arrival at Tan Son Nhat airport, where you may have landed before 1975, meet our guide for transfer to the hotel, where along the way, you can chat with your guide on how Vietnam has changed since. Begin a city tour of Saigon’s historical landmarks including the airy, ochre-colored Old Saigon Post Office, the rustic-red Notre Dame Cathedral, the former Presidential Palace that witnessed the rise and fall of four presidents before the North and South Vietnam reunified, and the War Remnant Museum for a vivid insight of the American war through the local’s eyes (be prepared for sensitive displayed photos). Welcome dinner in the evening is at the historic Majestic hotel restaurant. Overnight in Saigon.
Day 02: Mekong Delta
Depart Saigon at 7 am for Vinh Long, stopping at the Dong Tam snake farm, the former base of the 9th US Division and Riverine Units. From here, we visit Ap Bac village, the site of the ground battle between the Viet Cong and ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam). Upon arriving at Cai Be, board the charming Mekong Queen, a wooden motorized boat, to explore life and agriculture on the river. The first stop is the bustling Cai Be floating market, filled with number of boats bursting with fruits, vegetables, and other products along the river banks. Traders live on the river in their boats for generations. After another 20-minute cruise, get off your boat, enjoy 10-min walking on narrow lane watching the world goes by. A family-run longan (a local fruit) drying processing factory is an optional stop. How about visiting and having lunch at an ancient Mandarin house where four generations of family members are living together? After a lunch filled with Mekong Delta specialties, you can also take a stroll around the orchard to learn how it contributes to the family’s livelihood. Either walk or take a rowing sampan back to Mekong Queen. Cruise back to the boat docking station with a stop en route at a brick factory. Overnight in Saigon.
Day 03: Saigon – Hue (Air)
Transfer to the airport for early morning flight to Hue, the old capital of Vietnam under the reign of the Nguyen Dynasty. On arrival, transfer to the hotel. Take a boat trip upstream to visit Thien Mu pagoda where a Buddhist monk burned himself to death in 1963 to protest the war and the previous government’s ban on religious freedom. Next stop is the Imperial citadel, the site of the bloodiest street battle between the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) and the Marine Corps during the Tet Offensive in 1968. Continue further down to the Phu Cat quarter to visit the sites where 3,000 Hue people working for the Southern government were buried alive during the Offensive. Lunch is at the home of a Hue historian, Mr. Phan Thuan An, former resident of the Princess of Emperor Dong Khanh. In the afternoon, visit the Tu Duc royal tomb and Dong Ba market. Dinner is at a restored Royal home offering Royal Hue cuisine. Overnight in Hue.
Day 04: DMZ
Depart for the DMZ zone in the early morning. Places of military significance in the area include the former American militarybase of Khe Sanh, and other operational sites such as Rock Pile, Camp Carol, Dak’rong suspension bridge, Tacon airfields, and Lang Vay special force camp. After lunch at a local restaurant, we visit the Truong Son cemetery, the McNamara wall, and the Ben Hai River, on the 17th parallel, which divided the North and the South. Drive back to Hue for the night. Overnight in Hue.
Day 05: Hue – Danang
In the morning, leave Hue for Danang with a stop at Camp Eagle near Phu Bai, the former US special force base. After an hour’s drive, we start climbing the Hai Van pass – meaning Pass of the Ocean Clouds – which boasts a spectacular panoramic view of the central coastline from the summit. Upon descending the mountain towards Danang, you can see the famed beach where US Marines landed in 1965. On arrival in Danang, visit the Marble Mountains, an ideal sanctuary for VCs during the war. Then we travel to China Beach, the former playground ground of the US Marines. Transfer to the hotel with a stop at the former US airbase and depot on the way. The remainder of the day is to be spent at your leisure. Overnight in Danang.
Day 06: Danang – Pleiku (Air)
Transfer to the airport for a mid-morning flight to Pleiku, considered the most strategically important position of the US Military in the central highlands. After checking in at the hotel, drive southward on Highway 14 to visit Ham Rong pass and Camp Enari, the former DivisionHeadquarters of the 4th infantry (Ivy) . Lunch is at a local restaurant. Continue to Cacteka plantation and Bau Can, the former operational areas of the 4th Division. Return to the hotel for dinner. Overnight in Pleiku.
Day 07: Pleiku
In the morning, we drive to Dak To to Charlie hill, the former airbase of the 4th Division. Dak To was the site of heavy conflicts between the NVA units and the 4th Division along the Ho Chi Minh and Sihanouk trails. After lunch at a local restaurant visit the Montegnard in Condom, wooden church. Drive back to Pleiku, with a stop at Camp Halloway. Dinner is at a local restaurant. Overnight in Pleiku.
Day 08: Pleiku – Saigon (Air)
Transfer to Pleiku airport for the late morning flight to Saigon. Upon arrival proceed directly to the famous Cu Chi tunnels to explore the amazing underground tunnel system built by Vietnamese guerilla fighters during the war. On the way to the Cu Chi complex, we will pass the former Cu Chi base, the former Headquarters of the 25th Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning). Dinner tonight is at the former home of the US Ambassador to Vietnam in 1960s, Henry C. Lodge. Overnight in Saigon.
Day 09: Ho Chi Minh departure
